Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the option to contest particular calls from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
