The Legendary Anime Ends a 27-Year Tradition in 2026

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included dozens of filler arcs. Starting in the new year, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the animated series will go on a quarterly break until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

From now on, One Piece will release a pair of cours every year for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the universe — incorporating more content, tempo, and timing of the source material.” However, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime previously took a half-year pause that began in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the visuals and allow the comic to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to supply fans with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

While some recap episodes appeared during this season, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may result in one episode of the anime covering one chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or more to compensate for scheduling.

It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of production, which focused on being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course itself have numerous filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the next. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple at most releasing each year, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the original work.
