Seven accused individuals of Germany's far-left group face trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the group was behind targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or are in custody.”
