British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.
The facility, located using intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.
There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
IS - referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.
RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I must thank all the members of British forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."
During December, the US military conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN reports Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
